How do I build an email template?#
Open Marketing → Templates, press New template, and drag blocks from the palette into the email. Each block edits in place, and the preview updates as you type.
Build your first template
Step 1: Create the template
Press New template and give it a Template name your team will recognize, such as "Monthly newsletter".Open TemplatesStep 2: Write the subject and preview text
The Subject line is what people decide on. The preview text shows next to the subject in most inboxes, so use it to finish the thought.Step 3: Drag in your blocks
Drag a heading, some text and a button into the email, or click a block to add it at the end. Reorder blocks by their grip, or with Up and Down from the keyboard.Step 4: Personalize it
Open Merge fields and trigger links, press Copy next to a field, and paste it into any text, heading or button.Step 5: Check both screens
Switch the preview between Desktop, Phone and Both, then open Plain-text version to see what text-only inboxes get.Step 6: Save and send a test
Press Save template, then Send test to me. When it looks right, press Use in a campaign.
Which blocks does the email builder have?#
Eight block types cover every marketing email, and one email holds up to 60 blocks.
| Block | What you set | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Text, size (large, medium, small), left or center | The headline and section titles |
| Text | Paragraphs with merge fields, left or center | The message itself |
| Button | Label and link | The one action you want: book, buy, reply |
| Image | Image address, alt text, optional link, width 40 to 600 px | Logos, product shots, event banners |
| Two columns | Left and right text | Side-by-side offers; columns stack on phones |
| Divider | A thin line between sections | Breaking a newsletter into parts |
| Spacer | Height 4 to 120 px | Breathing room around a button |
| Footer note | Small print above the unsubscribe line | A P.S., hours, or a legal line |
How do merge fields and fallbacks work?#
A merge field swaps in each contact's own details when the email sends. Add a fallback after a vertical bar and contacts with a blank field still get a natural greeting.
{{contact.firstName|there}} First name, "there" when blank
{{contact.lastName}} Last name
{{contact.email}} Email
{{contact.companyName}} Company
{{business.name}} Your business name
{{custom.your_field_key}} Any custom field, by its key
{{trigger_link.<id>}} A trigger link that tags the clickerWhat are saved sections?#
Saved sections are runs of blocks you build once and drop into any email: your logo header, a product row, your signature. Tick the blocks, name the section, and it appears under Saved sections in every template and campaign. An account keeps up to 200 sections of up to 20 blocks each.
Inserting a section copies its blocks, so you can tailor one email without changing the section or any other email that uses it.
Do templates look right on phones?#
Yes. Every template renders as a responsive email: two-column blocks stack into one column on narrow screens, and the Phone preview shows that real mobile layout, not a shrunken desktop. Both puts desktop and phone side by side so you catch problems before you send.
Where can I use a template?#
- Campaigns: pick the template when you build an email campaign, or press Use in a campaign from the template.
- Workflows: send the same design as a welcome email, reminder or follow-up from CRM automations.
- Duplicate a template from the list to start a variation without touching the original.
