What does the AI receptionist do on a call?#
It answers, listens and acts. Each turn, the caller's words become text, the agent answers from its instructions and your calendar's open times, and the reply is spoken back. When the call ends, it closes with one of four outcomes you can filter and automate on.
| Outcome | What happened | What runs next |
|---|---|---|
| Booked | The caller picked an open time and the agent booked it on your calendar | Calendar confirmations, reminders and appointment workflows |
| Transferred | The caller asked for a person and the agent rang your transfer number | The call continues with your team |
| Message | The agent took the caller's message for your team | A note on the contact and the Voice AI call finished trigger |
| Ended | The caller got their answer and hung up | The transcript and summary on the contact |
Hear it for yourself: call +1 (561) 401-0518 and ask it anything a customer would.
How do I set up an AI receptionist?#

Under Numbers, use Find a number with an area code or digits, then Add the one you want.Open Phone setupStep 2: Add a Voice AI agent

Which Voice AI agent settings matter most?#
| Setting | What it controls | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting | The first words callers hear | Agent Studio adds the AI assistant introduction if your greeting leaves it out |
| What it knows | Services, hours, quoted prices, FAQs | Write it the way you would brief a new hire on day one |
| Calendar | Where it books appointments | Leave it blank and the agent takes messages instead |
| Transfer to | The number it rings when a caller asks for a person | Leave it blank and it offers to take a message |
| Turn limit | How many back-and-forths before it wraps up | Defaults to 12, adjustable from 2 to 30 |
What are unanswered calls costing you right now?#
Every call that rings out is a job that goes to whoever picks up next. Put your own numbers in and see the monthly gap the receptionist closes.
Can a caller talk the AI into something it should not do?#
No. Caller speech is treated as untrusted text, so a caller cannot rewrite the agent's rules, change the transfer number or reach actions you did not give it. It books only times your calendar shows as open.
Give the receptionist a line in phone numbers, and connect your calendars so it books callers into real open times.
